Wingecarribee celebrates a week of Environmental Events to honour National Eucalyptus Day and Nature

Wingecarribee Shire Council is excited to announce a week of events dedicated to environmental awareness and engagement. From a captivating book launch to an immersive film screening, residents and visitors alike are invited to participate in these enriching activities.

Book Launch: “The Forest Wars” by Professor David Lindenmayer

Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Time: 12:00 PM – 4:30 PM

Location: Council’s offices, Theatrette Room

Join us for the launch of “The Forest Wars”, the latest publication by renowned forest ecologist and conservationist, Professor David Lindenmayer. Delve into the pressing issues of native forest logging and its detrimental repercussions on bushfires, wildlife, and public finances.

Professor Lindenmayer will share insights and advocate for sustainable forest management practices. Attendees will have the opportunity to get their books signed, enjoy afternoon tea, and engage in discussions with Professor Lindenmayer. The winners of the Eucalyptus Photography Competition will also be announced during this event.

Capture the beauty of Eucalyptus trees in the Southern Highlands and stand a chance to win exciting prizes.

Belinda Booth, Council’s Environment Officer said, “there are 63 species of eucalyptus trees in the highlands, this is an excellent opportunity to encourage our community to get out into nature to capture some of this beauty and diversity of eucalyptus trees”.

Entries will be reviewed by esteemed environmental researcher, and eucalyptus expert Peter Mobbs. Winners will be announced by Professor David Lindenmayer at the book launch event on March 20, in recognition of National Eucalyptus Day.

Film Screening: “The Giants”

Date: Wednesday, March 20, 2024

Time: 6:00 PM

Location: Council’s offices

Experience the captivating biopic celebrating environmentalist Bob Brown and Australia’s giant trees. “The Giants” intertwines Brown’s remarkable journey with the fascinating life cycle of ancient trees, inviting viewers to reflect on conservation and environmental stewardship.

Special guest Professor David Lindenmayer, whose research contributes to the film’s narrative, will be present for a discussion following the screening. “Bob Brown is a phenomenal conservationist and activist, putting the plight of our great forests ahead of his own, the story of “The Giants” is an inspirational journey”, said Belinda.
