Across our Shire this Saturday, September 16, all RFS stations will be hosting a Get Ready Weekend event. With the heightened risk of bushfires looming for what is forecast to be a hot, dry Summer, this is an opportunity you won’t want to miss. Check out the RFS events happening near you and get the help you need to prepare for bushfire season, direct from the source of truth.

The rain events of recent years have led to a lot of vegetation growth across our Shire’s natural bushland areas and farmland. This means there’ll be a lot of debris on the ground as the weather heats up, posing a potential hazard during bushfire season from October 1 to March 31, 2023.

Together with local fire and emergency agencies, Council is working to ensure our Shire’s preparedness and an efficiently coordinated response in the event of an emergency. “Preparedness is a shared responsibility and community members can do their part by connecting with RFS resources for how to plan ahead and prepare their property,” says Wingecarribee Shire Council General Manager Lisa Miscamble.

“The Get Ready Weekend is a great opportunity to get to know your local RFS brigade and find out first-hand, the steps you can take now to be better prepared.”

Four years ago, our Shire came under direct threat from the Green Wattle Creek and Morton bushfires. “Preparation can make a life-saving difference in the event of a bushfire emergency, so take this opportunity to get involved in your local RFS event and plan ahead with their help.” Lisa said.

Get Ready Weekend Events will be hosted at all our local RFS brigade sites on Saturday this weekend.

“Village residents who think you’ve heard it all before, think again! We encourage all community members to come along and learn something they don’t know about preparing for bushfire season,” says Penrose RFS Member.  “It’s important this information sinks in so that if you find yourself in a bushfire emergency you’ll have a plan in place and know who to call and what to do.”
