Grant gets women’s cricket going
High on their wish-list since a women’s cricket comp started-up in the Highlands 3 years ago, Bundanoon Cricket Club have fulfilled their hopes of getting a team off the ground thanks to a grant through Council’s Community Assistance Scheme. The funds helped to buy uniforms and keep the cost of participating accessible for all.
The new Bundanoon Women’s Cricket Team will be an important outlet for local women of all ages according to club President Tim Stirton.“Playing cricket is so good for inclusion in our small community and women play a big part in our club, from juniors to committee members,” Tim says.“I know some of the mums are really looking forward to having something like this, that’s about them, and helps them to stay connected with other women in the community”.
The club will invest the grant funding in buying the uniforms and equipment needed to get the women’s team up and running, “And importantly, it will help us to keep costs down so that everyone who wants to, will have the opportunity to take part.” Tim explains.
“This is exactly the sort of community-led initiative, focused on connecting our village communities, that Council’s Community Assistance Scheme is proud to partner with,” says WSC Coordinator Community Development, Corinne Buxton. “We look forward to seeing the team in action and enjoying connecting with other teams across our Shire.”
A total of $120,000 was made available by Wingecarribee Shire Council for this round of Community Assistance grants. The scheme aims to encourage and grow community participation and promote partnerships within our region’s many distinct communities.
Grants could be sought toward sporting, cultural, welfare, community development, equipment or capital works projects and a wide variety of community-led ideas were put forward.
“Residents can expect to see a lot of good things happening for their local community as a result of the wide range of initiatives our Community Assistance Scheme has invested in,” Corinne says.
