As participants taking part in the Kangaroo Recruitment March Centenary Re-enactment make their way through the Shire, Council is reminding residents of a special event to be held this Friday evening in honour of the Kangaroos of 1915.

Dr Brendan Nelson who is the Director of the Australian War Memorial in Canberra has been invited to give an oration at the Mittagong RSL Club honouring the original marchers who volunteered for the Great War one hundred years ago.

Features of the evening will include performances by the RSL Rural Commemorative Youth Choir and an oration of ‘Here is their spirit’ by the former Federal Opposition Leader.

“I first saw Dr Nelson speak in 2014 on the planning of the ANZAC Centenary Commemorations,” said Council’s Deputy General Manager Corporate Strategy and Development Services, Mark Pepping.

“He had attendees captivated by the first-hand accounts of the ANZAC’s who stormed the beach of Gallipoli in 1915.

“His passion for this project is undeniable and we’re confident Friday evening’s attendees will be treated to a moving and insightful evening,” Mr Pepping added.

Cost is $10 per person and includes light refreshments.

For tickets and more information contact the Mittagong RSL Club on 4872 6700.

The presentation coincides with a visit to Bundanoon by the Premier of NSW, Mike Baird MP on Thursday 1 October to meet descendants of the original Kangaroo Marchers.
