Activate Inclusion! A free and fun sports day for kids with disabilities

This week, in partnership with Disability Sports Australia we hosted an Activate Inclusion Sports Day for local kids aged 5-18 who have sensory, physical, or intellectual disabilities to join in the fun! Inclusive spaces and activities for local youth are at the heart of Wingecarribee Shire Council’s focus on connecting our communities, and adaptive equipment in an inclusive environment making taking part accessible for all.

“We want kids of all abilities from across our Shire to have the opportunity to get involved in sports and staying active,” says Councils’ Coordinator Community Development, Corinne Buxton. “Bringing this day to our community was made possible with the support of Children’s Charity, Variety, and was professionally delivered by Disability Sports Australia.”

Local kids enjoyed a range of modified sports activities on the day, facilitated by specialised coaches with the help of students from local universities and volunteers from community organisations, including Council. “We can’t underestimate the value of community collaborations like this for fostering inclusivity,” Corinne says. “We’re grateful for the dedication of everyone involved, to building our shared vision for more inclusive communities.”

Beyond the physical benefits of playing sport, kids gain a sense of belonging and personal empowerment through team activities. “Events like these are about building their self-esteem and confidence while fostering new friendships and breaking down stereotypes,” Corinne says.

Strong take-up of this free opportunity by local families (55 kids), and great success with all activities on the day, have set a precedent for future inclusive events in Wingecarribee.
