Repair and renewal works are set to commence on Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Moss Vale Civic Centre following the appointment of specialist contractor Matrix Group Co P/L.

Councillors awarded the contract as part of a report which evaluated tenders for the Civic Centre Repair and Refurbishment project at Wednesday night’s Ordinary Meeting of Council.

Council’s Deputy General Manager Operations, Finance and Risk, Barry Paull said the repair and refurbishment works would enable Council to better meet community needs.

“The current building is old, inefficient and doesn’t have good access for the public,” he said.  “We also have ongoing difficulties with accessibility, maintenance and storage.”

The repair and refurbishment project will include the construction of a new roof structure, expansion of the Moss Vale Library into the existing unused courtyard and an upgrade to a modern and energy efficient air conditioning system.

Other improvements include the installation of an accessible lift and toilets, electrical and fire protection upgrades and improved public access to Council’s Customer Service Centre.

Works will begin in early January 2020 to take advantage of the traditionally quieter holiday period.

The estimated construction period is 12 months.

Temporary changes required during construction to safely accommodate the various building modifications include the closures of the Kirkham Street entry, Moss Vale Library and central courtyard.  The Council Chambers will also be relocated to the Theatrette and Donkin Avenue will be reduced to one-way traffic.

“We understand construction activities may from time to time inconvenience customers visiting the building but we’ll work closely with our contractor to minimise any disruption,” Mr Paull added.

“Ultimately these repairs and refurbishments will allow us to better meet the current and future needs of our customers without having to build or move into new premises.”

The total cost of the project is estimated at $9.26 million with funding sourced via existing cash reserves and loan borrowings which have been included in Council’s adopted Delivery Program and Budget.

Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Civic Centre is located at 68 Elizabeth Street in Moss Vale.
