Water restrictions start across Shire
Wingecarribee Shire Council is calling on residents to reduce water use with water restrictions in force across the Shire from Monday 16 December 2019.
The restrictions have been introduced following months of sustained dry weather and apply to all households and commercial businesses across the Southern Highlands.
Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Deputy General Manager Operations, Finance and Risk Barry Paull said the introduction of restrictions would help ensure the long-term security of the Shire’s drinking water supply.
“While our Shire still has considerable water capacity, acting now will help sustain our drinking water supplies should conditions worsen,” he said.
“This drought is without doubt one of the worst in our State’s recent history and we know our Shire’s residents understand how important it is to do their bit to help conserve water.”
Under the first stage of water restrictions residents and businesses are no longer able to:
- Use sprinklers,
- Leave hoses running unattended, or
- Clean hard surfaces such as paths and driveways with a hose,
However, residents are still able to use a hand-held hose fitted with a trigger nozzle to water gardens between 4pm and 10am. Similarly, cars can be washed on lawns with a bucket and rinsed with a trigger nozzle hose.
Mr Paull did not rule out further restrictions should the dry spell continue.
“Should the weather fail to improve and water consumption not decline, we will consider introducing tougher restrictions in the future,” he said.
“We encourage all residents to be mindful of their water use and play their part in helping conserve this precious resource.”
Water restrictions are enforceable and penalties apply.
