How secure is your child’s restraint?

Every year, many children are injured – or worse – in car crashes. Many of these incidents could be prevented or the impact reduced if the right child car seat is correctly used.

Current laws state that children up to the age of six months must be secured in an approved rearward facing restraint. Children aged between six months of age and four years old must be secured in either a rear or forward facing approved child restraint with an inbuilt harness.

Council’s Road Safety Officer, Melanie Lausz, is encouraging parents to ensure their child seats are fitted correctly at Council’s upcoming FREE Child Restraint Checking Day on Saturday 28 November at the Highlands Market Place in Mittagong.

“Transport for NSW estimate two in three child car seats are incorrectly fitted,” Ms Lausz said.  “As drivers we are responsible for the safety of all our passengers.”

“By law all children under the age of seven years must be secured in the correct child seat for their age and size.”

Wingecarribee Shire Council will be conducting the FREE Child Restraint Checking Day with the support of the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS), Highlands Market Place and Highlands Pit Lane of Mittagong.

Inspections will be carried out by an RMS authorised fitter from Highlands Pit Lane and will identify and adjust any unsafe fittings.  Participants will only be charged the cost of any materials required to render the restraint safe.

The FREE Child Restraint Checking Day will take place at Highlands Market Place Old Hume Highway Mittagong in the underground car park on Saturday 28 November 2015 from 9am to 12.30pm.

Each check will take approximately 15 minutes.

Bookings for the day are essential as spaces are limited.

For bookings contact Council’s Road Safety Officer on phone 4868 0809.
