Temporary closure of stairway extended

21 March, 2019

Wingecarribee Shire Council wishes to advise that the stone stairway in the Mount Gibraltar Heritage Reserve will remain closed and reopen to the public in early June 2019.

The temporary closure has been extended to allow a specialised contractor to continue with stage two rehabilitation works to the stone stairway. These works are being undertaken to preserve the heritage stairway and address onsite erosion.

Stage one works were completed in February 2019.

This steep set of heritage stone steps link the Bowral Lookout to Cliff and Ellen Streets and the adjacent Heritage Quarries Circuit and Quarries car park.

While the stone stairway will remain closed during May, the section of pathway from Cliff Street to the Heritage Quarries Circuit will reopen from mid-April 2019.  This will enable walkers to access the Heritage Quarries Circuit.

The lookout and picnic area off Oxley Drive will remain open for the entire duration of the works.

Stage two works have been made possible through additional grant funding secured by the Mount Gibraltar Landcare and Bushcare Volunteer Group and funded through the NSW Government’s Clubgrants Category 3 Infrastructure Grants program.

These grants are made possible by a contribution from the state’s registered clubs to reinvest profits from gaming machines back into community projects.

Council reminds reserve users to heed the safety notices erected around the entrance to the walkway and thanks users in advance for their cooperation.

All time frames are subject to weather conditions.

Mount Gibraltar Heritage Reserve is located on Oxley Drive in Mittagong.
