General Manager calls for action on Berrima rail crossing

19 August, 2011

Wingecarribee Shire Council General Manager, Jason Gordon has called on the Federal Government to assist in the construction of a railway overpass on Berrima Road a day after a train breakdown caused delays at the busy intersection.

“Wednesday’s breakdown on the Boral train line caused significant delays and disruption to local residents, commuters and businesses and emphasized how important this busy thoroughfare is to the Shire,” he said.

Council recently submitted a proposal for $8 million in partnership with Boral to have the Berrima Road and Taylor Avenue intersection fast-tracked for urgent upgrades as part of a federal Regional Development Fund application.

Included in the proposal was a railway overpass.

“This week’s incident highlights the need for immediate action to be taken to upgrade the intersection to ensure a repeat of Wednesday’s breakdown doesn’t happen again,” Mr Gordon said.

“In the interim, we’re just thankful that a serious accident didn’t occur as a result of the breakdown.”

A decision on the fund application is pending.
