Wingecarribee Shire Council is asking residents to provide feedback on its Draft Media and Social Media Policies now on public exhibition.

Council’s Interim Deputy General Manager, Ms Marissa Racomelara, explained the purpose of the draft policies.

“These policies guide how Council communicates and engages with our community through both traditional and social media,” she said. “They detail our proposed procedures, responsibilities and responses when dealing with both mediums.”

The Media Policy, previously adopted in April 2018, has been simplified and continues to promote positive media relationships.

“We recognise that social media is becoming increasingly popular and felt it important to reflect this in a separate document,” said Ms Racomelara.

“The Draft Social Media Policy aims to ensure Council’s social media platforms are safe spaces that promote respectful online communication.”

Some of the recommended provisions included within the draft policy suggest staff and councillors ensure any views posted on social media cannot be misinterpreted as an official comment from Council.  Other suggestions include not posting anything that potentially breaches Council’s Code of Conduct.

“While many of these recommendations may seem like common sense suggestions, they’ve been included to minimise risk to Council, councillors and employees,” added Ms Racomelara.

“We encourage anyone interested in media and communications to view this draft document and make comment by the closing date.”

Feedback can be made online, by email to mail@wsc.nsw.gov.au or in writing addressed to Wingecarribee Shire Council, PO Box 141 Moss Vale 2577.

Submissions and feedback close on 29 August 2021.

Following the close of the exhibition period, a final report considering feedback will be presented to the incoming Council.
