Wingecarribee Shire Council is set to celebrate International Compost Awareness Week with free activities to promote the benefits of composting.

International Compost Awareness Week is an annual event, this year held between 2 and 8 May 2021.

Council’s Waste Education Officer, Phoebe Ward, explained that activities aim to raise the profile of composting and the important role it plays in diverting organic waste from landfill.

“Last year’s bin audit revealed that more than half our rubbish is made up of food and garden waste that can be recycled,” she said.

During the month of May, Council is offering a number of COVID-safe workshops to help residents reduce the amount of food waste being thrown away and learn more about organic diversion initiatives.

“Once you get your compost pile started, you’ll find that it’s an easy way to repurpose kitchen scraps and other organic materials into something your garden will benefit from,” said Phoebe.

“From simple home composting to worm farming and waste reduction and recycling tips, there’s a workshop for everyone.”

All events will be held at Council’s Resource Recovery Centre located at 177 Berrima Road in Moss Vale and are free to attend.

Bookings are essential as places are limited.
