Over 150 recipients from local government areas in NSW were honoured during NSW Carers Week, which was celebrated between 16 and 23 October 2011.

Three local Carers, Julie Bates, Margurite Bonwick and Berlio O’Brien were nominated for the NSW Carers Awards and were recognised by Wingecarribee Shire Council in a ceremony on Wednesday 26 October.

Julie Bates from Bowral was the recipient of the 2011 Wingecarribee Local Carers Award.

Wingecarribee Shire Mayor Councillor Ken Halstead said the small ceremony, which took place prior to the Council meeting, was a celebration of carers and their contribution to the lives of the people they care for and to the wider community.

“With more than one in 10 people in NSW providing voluntary care and assistance to those in need, Carers Week is a great time for the general public to acknowledge the tireless work and value carers provide in our community,” he said.

“NSW has some 748,000 carers across the state. They can be parents, partners, brothers, sisters, friends, sons or daughters.”

The Awards, now in their second year, are held in partnership withCarers NSW and the NSW Government.
