Wingecarribee Shire Council is gearing up to host this year’s Wingecarribee Schools Environment Day which will be held at Lake Alexandra Reserve, Mittagong on Tuesday 13 October 2015.

As part of the celebrations, Year 5 and 6 students from throughout the Shire have been invited to the interactive open day and participate in hands-on displays and experiments.

Wingecarribee Shire Mayor and Chair of Council’s Environment and Sustainability Committee, Councillor Larry Whipper said the day was an opportunity for students to learn more about their local environment.

“The day is a celebration of our diverse environment and a chance to learn how we can all work together to better protect and enhance it.

“Another flow on effect we’ve found in previous years is that the children take the lessons from the day back to their classrooms and homes and talk to their families about the sustainability of their lifestyles.

“This is vitally important as ultimately, it is the students who will inherit responsibility for the planet and the repercussions of our actions,” Councillor Whipper said.  “And if they can educate their parents and families on the benefits of responsible environmental management, that’s an added bonus.”

Now in its tenth year, more than 650 students from 19 Highland’s schools are expected to attend this year’s event.

In addition to educating the students, the fun activities have been designed to allow the students the opportunity to mix with other schools groups.

“We have no doubt that staff from Council’s Environment and Sustainability Branch have planned a great day out for the kids which promises to be a lot of fun.”

The event is principally funded by Council’s Environment Levy and supported by South-East Local Land Services, Wingecarribee Landcare and Bushcare Network, Moss Vale Community Garden, NSW Rural Fire Service, WaterNSW, NSW Office of Environment and Heritage (National Parks and Wildlife Service), NSW Department of Primary Industries (Fisheries), BirdLife Southern Highlands, Yamanda Aboriginal Association, Camden Park Environmental Education Centre, Illawarra Environmental Education Centre, Insektus, Australian Wildlife Displays, Wollongong Botanic Gardens, Wildlife Rescue South Coast, WIRES and Reptiles Up Close!
