Wingecarribee Shire Council, in conjunction with the University of the Third Age (U3A), is to offer a short course about local government, its services and functions.

Wingecarribee Shire Council General Manager explained the purpose of the course.

“The ten week course is a deliberate decision on the part of Council to be more open and transparent,” he said. “It will help explain the workings of our organisation, what we do and what limitations we’re bound by.”

“Participants will also be able to learn first-hand of some of the great community work being done behind the scenes.”

The 20 hour course, held on a Tuesday morning for ten weeks, will include a variety of topics such as:

The role of the mayor and councillors; Services, structure and function of council; Vision and challenges for our Shire; Council meetings, public access to information, record management and finances; Development applications and community services.

The General Manager and Mayor Juliet Arkwright will join more than 20 council staff in the presentations.

Two guided bus tours will also be included as part of the program.

“The tours will be of particular interest as the participants will be shown some of the unique services we provide such as the soon to be completed Moss Vale Indoor Aquatic Centre, the Southern Regional Livestock Exchange and some on site examples of land rehabilitation we’re involved in,” Mr Gordon said.

The Southern Highlands University of the Third Age is an educational body which offers short courses for members over the age of 50.

To participate in the course, participants must become a member of U3A at a cost of $22.50 for six months. For membership forms and payment options visit www.sohiu3a.org.au or contact Geoff Byrne on phone 4861 1588.
