Plan ahead for changed traffic conditions on Old South Road as upgrades continue

31 January, 2023

The next stage of Old South Road upgrades will require temporary changes to access from Monday 6 February 2023. Residents will still have access, however all other motorists should plan to take an alternative route. Here’s what you need to know:

As extensive improvements to Old South Road progress to the badly damaged section between Bong Bong Road and Range Road, road closure will be necessary between Range Road and Aylmerton Road, from Monday 6 February.

The closure will remain in place when the project is expected to be complete, weather permitting.

“The extensive improvements needed to make this major connector road safer, and smoother to travel, is a priority for the community, and this temporary closure marks the next stage in construction,” says Council’s Director Service and Project Delivery, Karin Targa. “It is likely that weather conditions will continue to be a hindrance to roadworks, however we are persisting with our target of project completion in time for the Christmas holiday season travel in late 2023.”

From Monday 6 February 2023 only local residents will have access to the section of road under re-construction, between Range Road and Aylmerton Road. Alternative routes for all other motorists will include travelling via Mittagong, or down the Hume Highway, depending on your destination.

Signage will be erected along Old South Road advising of the changed traffic conditions.

Construction works will involve road pavement widening and rehabilitation, installation of guardrails, construction of stormwater pits and pipes and other associated works. We urge people to be mindful of heavy machinery and workers active in the area.

Council apologises for any inconvenience and thanks Highland motorists for their patience as we progress this vital Highlands traffic reconstruction project.

Once complete, the $11.56 million Old South Road rehabilitation project will provide improved traffic flow, a safer and smoother ride for motorists and easier access between residential areas and town centres.
