Asbestos remediation to start on Highlands Golf Club

7 January, 2014

Wingecarribee Shire Council is set to start remediation works on the Highlands Golf Club starting from Monday 13 January 2014.

The works will involve the excavation and removal of some 3,500 cubic metres of material which was illegally dumped on site in 2007 and has since tested positive for asbestos.

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has approved Council’s Remediation Strategy which involves the screening, testing and classification of the material.

All contaminated material will be immediately covered, removed from site and disposed of offsite at an authorised disposal facility.

Works scheduled to commence on Monday 13 January 2014 will be undertaken by specialist asbestos contractors Enviropacific Services and DLA Environmental in accordance with strict asbestos removal guidelines.

Contractors involved in the removal will wear appropriate personal protective equipment and the site will be watered down prior to any excavation. The area will also be fully fenced and asbestos work signs will be posted in the area. Residents are asked to keep clear of the work site.

Remediation works are expected to be completed by early March 2014.

The Highlands Golf Club is located on the Old Hume Highway in Mittagong.
