NSW Youth Week returns for 2018
Southern Highlands youth are invited to celebrate unity through diversity for NSW Youth Week (NYW) from Friday 13 April to Sunday 22 April 2018.
Council’s Youth Liaison Officer Michelle Williams explained the importance of the week for the Shire’s young residents.
“It provides a chance for our youth to get involved with Council and local service organisations, meet other young people with similar interests and find out how they can get involved with other events throughout the year,” she said.
Launching this year’s program is an inter-generational day of celebration on the foreshores of Lake Alexandra on Friday 13 April.
Titled Let’s do more together the event will begin at 10.30am and feature activities, games, a walking tour of the lake, yoga and morning tea and lunch.
Activities continue into the afternoon and evening with Plugged in the Park, a showcase of local acoustic performers in Bowral’s Corbett Gardens. Food trucks and local service providers will be on hand from 3.30pm to 6pm.
On Saturday 15 April, the Wests Tigers NRL team will headline the Five Ways Mini Fest at Loseby Park Oval. From 10am to 2pm, the mini-festival will promote wellbeing through workshops, live music and entertainment.
For those aged over 15 years, safeTALK is a half day workshop that assists people in becoming suicide alert helpers. The workshop begins at 10.30am on Tuesday 17 April in Bowral. Bookings are essential.
Adventure fans will enjoy Bowral’s Amazing Race hosted by the Highlands Youth Centre on Thursday 19 April. Contact Jason on phone 4862 1122 for more information.
Council’s official Youth Week program concludes with a family screening of Guardians of the Galaxy 2 under the stars at Leighton Gardens from 6.30pm on Saturday 21 April.
“These events are a fantastic opportunity for teenagers and young adults across the Shire to have some fun in a drug and alcohol-free environment,” said Michelle.
All local NYW events are free to attend and have been either funded or co-funded by Wingecarribee Shire Council, Family and Community Services (FACS) and Highlands Youth Hub.
