Wingecarribee Shire Council’s Destination Southern Highlands team are calling on home chefs across the Shire to join them as they celebrate Pie Time.

Council’s Manager of Tourism and Events Steve Rosa said Pie Time was the perfect opportunity for local master chefs to showcase their talents.

“One of the feature events of our month-long Pie Time celebrations is the Southern Highlands Best Pie Competition,” Steve said.

“This contest is open to anyone who can bake a pie,” he said.  “Bakers, pie makers, chefs and even humble home cooks.”

The contest features seven categories including red meat, white meat, vegetarian, seafood, sweet, apprentice and community pies.

“Pie Time is much more than a tourist campaign designed to entice visitors to the Highlands,” Steve said.  “It’s also a great community event where locals can join in and enjoy some of the culinary delights of our Shire.”

The Southern Highlands Best Pie Competition will be held in the Senior Citizens Hall of Corbett Gardens located on Bendooley Street in Bowral on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 June.

Pies will be judged by award-winning pie makers and celebrity chefs including Pie Maker Peter Neubeck, Chef Robin Murray from Centennial Vineyards Restaurant, Chef Richard Kemp from Eschalot Restaurant and hospitality chefs from Illawarra TAFE’s Moss Vale Campus.

Trophies and certificates will be awarded at the Best Pie Competition Cocktail Party on the evening of Friday 23 June.

“I’d encourage all our budding home chefs to step up and join in the fun by entering their family pie as part of the Southern Highlands Best Pie Competition,” Steve added.

“It’s sure to be the tastiest competition of the year!”
