Council undertakes review of engineering specifications
Wingecarribee Shire Council is reviewing its entire suite of engineering specifications in a bid to provide the local design and construction industry with greater consistency and clarity.
The purpose of the project is to ensure that any infrastructure that Council builds, or any infrastructure constructed and transferred to Council by a developer, meets the standards required by Wingecarribee Shire Council.
Council’s Manager of Assets, Stace Lewer explained the benefits of the review.
“Developers, engineers and civil contractors often undertake construction works that upon completion will be handed over to Council as public infrastructure assets,” he said.
“It’s therefore imperative that any assets that will ultimately be transferred to Council are not only consistent but also meets industry specifications.”
As part of the review Council has aligned itself with Aus-Spec which is industry recommended and supported by the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia (IPWEA).
As part of the overhaul, the revised specifications will be grouped into ‘Design’ and ‘Construction’ categories. Examples of engineering specifications to be reviewed include roads, drainage and water and sewerage assets.
“These revised drawings and specifications will help provide greater uniformity for contractors and improve the quality of community assets that will ultimately be transferred to Council when complete.”
Information sessions will be offered to local developers and engineering firms prior to the release of the new specifications.
Council aims to have the new specifications implemented by the end of the calendar year.
