Wingecarribee Shire Council is inviting women of all ages from across the Shire to attend this year’s International Women’s Day on Friday 7 March with a special breakfast buffet at the Mittagong RSL.

Council’s Cultural Development Officer, Celeste Coucke, explained the significance of the day.

“International Women’s Day has been celebrated globally since 1911,” Ms Coucke said. “It’s an important day of recognition, a reason to gather with female friends to relax and reflect upon the extraordinary economic, political and social achievements of women.”

Each year, the United Nations celebrates International Women’s Day with a different theme designed to provoke dialogue. The theme for this year’s event is, ‘Inspiring Change’.

As part of this year’s local celebrations, Council will host guest speakers at the, “In MY Day…reflections on life as a woman in the old days” breakfast function.

In the old days gives some of our older women in our community the opportunity to share their great stories and for younger women to acknowledge their wit and wisdom,” Ms Coucke said.

“The breakfast will be a great opportunity for all women – young and old – to have a light hearted chance to reflect on this.”

The morning will also feature special performances by girls from Oxley College and the GLAMS choir as well as lucky door prizes and a table quiz.

“As always, the core message of International Women’s Day is that all women should look ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await younger women whilst sending a message of respect and thanks to the women who have walked before them,” Ms Coucke added.

Tickets for the full buffet breakfast and function are $26 and are available from the club on phone 4872 6700.

Bookings and pre-payment are essential.

The Southern Highlands International Women’s Day Breakfast will be held on Friday 7 March 2014 from 8am for 8.30am to 10.30am at the Mittagong RSL, located on the corner of the Old Hume Highway and Bessemer Street, Mittagong.
