In addition to celebrating the start of the festive season, staff from Wingecarribee Shire Council used last December’s end of year Christmas party to raise some funds for the Southern Highlands branch of Can Assist.

Organising the collection on behalf of Council was Karen Fair from Council’s Human Resources team.

“Most staff know someone touched by cancer and we hope the amount raised goes a small way to easing the burden of some of our Shire’s cancer patients,” Karen said.

Raised through raffles and lucky door prizes donated by staff at the party, the funds will help assist patients with accommodation, pharmaceutical and transport assistance.

Accepting the cheque from Can Assist was President Jann Wadsworth and Secretary Terry Hughes.

“For more than 50 years Can Assist has been helping our Shire’s residents battle cancer,” Jann said.

“As a charitable organisation all our monies collected are via donations and we’re always grateful for any assistance.”

Can Assist is a community-based charity dedicated solely to supporting country NSW people affected by all types of cancer and their families.

“Generally speaking, when diagnosed with cancer people living in the country have greater travel and accommodation expenses than city patients,” Jann said.

“A small thing like providing assistance with transport is just one area in which Can Assist can help relieve the burden for patients who already have enough to deal with.”

“Staff recognise the great work that Can Assist carry out across our Shire,” Karen added.  “And whilst our latest collection is only a minor contribution, we’d like to continue to support their efforts so we’re already looking at holding further fund raising drives throughout the year to support this wonderful local volunteer organisation.”

All donations to Can Assist are tax deductible and are distributed to local patients.
