The final steel beams are set to be lifted atop Council’s Moss Vale Civic Centre this week as contractors prepare to secure the structural framework in preparation for the new roof.

Council’s Acting General Manager Barry Paull said the installation of the new roof marked a significant milestone in the project.

“Passing motorists and pedestrians would have noticed the heavy-duty cranes onsite over the past weeks installing the framework,” he said.

“Because we’re working around a live-site this has been the most challenging and disruptive component of the construction,” the Acting General Manager said.  “The good news is that we’re now past the half-way mark of the project.”

Works on the repair and refurbishment of the 50-year-old building began in January 2020.

Construction activities carried out to date include the demolition of the existing library, major earthworks, installation of 34 supporting columns, structural steel installation, electrical overhaul and upgrade of the old air-conditioning system.

“It really was an inefficient and old building,” Mr Paull said.  “When finished the building will include an accessible lift to provide top-floor access to customers and staff of all-abilities, be more comfortable, efficient and safer.”

On completion the Civic Centre will also include a larger Customer Centre and public library and 100-kilowatt solar energy capture system.

“These improvements have been carefully chosen to benefit our customers,” Mr Paull stressed.  “While staff will no doubt appreciate the new water-tight roof and air-conditioning, the majority of improvements are being made to the public areas.”

Works will continue over the Christmas holiday period with major construction activities expected to be completed by March 2021.

“Even though construction is expected to continue for several months, I would like to thank our customers for the patience they have shown whilst these works have been taking place,” Mr Paull added.  “I would also thank the staff of Council who continue to work around the construction activities.”

The $9.26 million repair and renewal works are being undertaken by specialist contractor Matrix Group Co P/L.

Located at 68 Elizabeth Street in Moss Vale, the Civic Centre was originally opened in 1970 and has seen subsequent additions and alterations in 1983, 1990 and 1997.
