Bowral Memorial Hall to retain name
Bowral Memorial Hall will retain its long-standing name following this evening’s endorsement by Council.
A report presented at Council’s Meeting of Wednesday 21 September 2022 found that 88 per cent of survey respondents did not support the renaming of the historic building.
Council’s Administrator Viv May PSM said the community feedback was decisive.
“Residents have spoken loud and clear that they do not want the name of the hall changed,” he said.
“This has been a transparent example of community democracy in action and is another example of the new Council listening to the local community.”
The report follows a request to Council to consider a change of name whilst the building undergoes refurbishment works.
A short survey was subsequently made available via Council’s online consultation hub, ‘Your Say Wingecarribee’.
Of the 1,220 responses received, 144 respondents supported renaming the hall while 1,076 people preferred the existing name.
The Administrator agreed with the recommendation within the report to retain the name of ‘Bowral Memorial Hall’.
“I thank everybody who took the time to provide their feedback,” Mr May added.
“It’s obvious from the sheer number of responses that the building is held in fond regard across the Shire.”
Bowral Memorial Hall is currently undergoing a multi-million-dollar refurbishment including installation of a new roof and lifts, upgrade of the kitchen and bathroom facilities and provision of access for all abilities. A new stage, air conditioning system, sound and lighting equipment are also being included. The building’s heritage façade is also being protected and rejuvenated.
The refurbishment of Bowral Memorial Hall is anticipated to be completed by March 2023.
