Bin Trim offers businesses a free waste assessment
Wingecarribee Shire Council is encouraging business owners to register for a free Bin Trim waste assessment to help take the hassle out of waste management.
Bin Trim is a NSW government initiative that helps eligible businesses reduce waste sent to landfill and maximise recycling through waste assessments and rebates to help with the purchase of recycling equipment.
Council’s Acting Deputy General Manager, Mr Richard Mooney, explained why recycling makes good business sense.
“Commercial waste is charged by weight so the heavier the bin, the more expensive it is,” he said.
“Roughly 70 per cent of the materials in a business’s general waste bin can be reused or recycled. From cardboard, paper, metal and plastic through to food waste – so much of this ends up in the general waste bin when it could be avoided, reused or recycled.”
An independent waste assessment through the Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CRJO) can help uncover potentially wasteful and expensive disposal practices and help find opportunities for recycling.
“Since August last year over 200 businesses have participated in the program with funding secured for recycling equipment such as balers, shredders, food dehydrators and other tailor-made waste systems,” said Mr Mooney.
“Every business that participates in the program will receive a custom-made action plan that identifies waste streams that can be diverted and recommendations on how to get there.”
