Wingecarribee Shire Council’s 2020 Southern Highlands Arts Trail has been hailed a success with close to 12,000 visitors flocking to studios and galleries throughout the Shire.

Council’s Cultural Development Officer Erin Adams explained that despite COVID-19 challenges, visitation and sales were both significantly higher than previous years.

“We saw a 77 percent increase in the number of visitors and a 102 percent increase in sales figures for studios,” she said. “That’s a fantastic boost for our local economy.”

“This year we were pleased to welcome galleries back to the trail,” continued Erin. “They provided a rich cultural experience and rest and respite for visitors.

New to the Trail for 2020 was a series of mini-events, mini-trails and the introduction of GPS mapping to help participants make the most of their weekend.

Mini events included ‘Wearable Treasures’, meet the artist and drawing classes in the garden.

Erin said that special considerations went in to planning for an event during a global pandemic.

“As well as being a COVID-Safe business, we had an evolving COVID-Safe Plan specifically for the Arts Trail that was updated as restrictions and advice changed.”

“The studios, artists and galleries who joined us this year provided plenty of entertainment and attracted visitors from near and far, showcasing what our beautiful Southern Highlands has to offer.

“Special thanks go to our Arts and Culture Committee who helped to raise the bar of professionalism on this year’s Trail.

“And of course, the event would not have been the success it was without the wonderful support we received from local residents and visitors.”

The 2021 Southern Highlands Art Trail will run over the weekend of the 6 and 7 November and again the following weekend of the 13 and 14 November.
